Jill Carr-Harris has been associated with women’s movement building, training and empowerment of women and gender policy research in India, Bangladesh and Philippines for the past two decades. Originally from Canada, Jill worked in India with the United Nations Development Programme for 2 years and then with other grassroots organizations. She is deeply committed to promoting the empowerment of women, focusing on this mission through Ekta Parishad- Mahila Manch or ‘women united’.
She has also been a part of peace initiatives through Jai Jagat International. Jai Jagat, which translates to "Jai Jagat International," is a worldwide peace march designed to highlight the critical need for action on four key areas as we work towards achieving peace: poverty eradication, social inclusion, tackling the climate crisis, and reducing armed violence and conflict. Jill has created resources and guides on non-violence and peace-building.
She currently travels throughout the world offering nonviolent trainings, building solidarity for the movement, and supporting advocacy process. She is also leading efforts to promote the concept of a nonviolent economy.
Jill has taken these experiences back to Canada in the form of lectures, writings and more recently, teaching and academic research. She taught a semester at George Brown College in the field of community development while completing through distance a master’s degree in adult education and community from St. Francis Xavier University, Canada. She has to her credit of developing a doctoral thesis on the topic of women and land rights in the University of Toronto’s Ontario Institute of Studies in Education on social movements, feminism and learning, Jill also has a deep understanding of the issue of food security in the global south.
